About us
Learning to sign with your baby is something that no mum wants to miss out on. If you can’t get to a class, or want materials to help you practise at home, Chelltune, the UK’s first specialist baby signing store can help.

My name is Michelle and I’m the owner of Chelltune. I hold a level three qualification in British Sign Language and am a communicator for Deaf people, so it seemed natural to sign with my own children.
I have two children who are both hearing. When my son was six months old, I started to use a few signs when I spoke to him. At first I used the signs for “food”, “more” and “milk”. He soon picked these signs up but used them infrequently. He has always been fond of animals so I then introduced the signs for “cat” and “dog”. I kept signing whenever I used these words but was quite cynical, I didn’t 100% believe that he would actually sign on a daily basis to communicate his needs.

When my son was 11months old he signed “dog” for the first time. From then on, there was no stopping him! I started to introduce more signs such as “book”, “bird”, “drink”, and “monkey”. His speech has always been very clear and once he began to talk I stopped using the signs.

My daughter was born in 2005 and I starting using some basic signs with her. By this time, my son was two years old and he relearned all the signs that he forgotten. He used them regularly when communicating with us and although he could talk they helped us to clarify what he meant if his speech was unclear. It also gave him the confidence to use difficult words.

As my daughter’s signing took off, I looked around for good resources but couldn’t find any stores dedicated to baby signing. It was at this point that I decided to set up Chelltune.

The store opened in 2006 and since then I’ve spoken to lots of Mums who use signs to communicate with their babies and are thrilled with the results. According to research, when you teach your baby to sign, he or she can show thoughts and needs that would otherwise have gone unexpressed. This means your baby is less frustrated, and together you develop an intimate bond as you share signs.

I hope you enjoy browsing the store.

Best wishes,
Michelle
