I started signing with my son when he was about 6 months old. I remember walking with him in a sling and him pointing out all the things he could see, we had a real conversation about what front doors were open or shut, rain coming from the clouds in the sky and birds playing in the trees. He was only one at the time and although I´d like to say he was able to communicate to that level because he is a genius I´m afraid I must credit sign language. At nearly 4 we still use a bit of signing, please and thank you and it´s very useful long distance at a park for example to be able to tell him to be careful, or that he is being cheeky, or does he need the loo instead of just yelling.

‘My 2 year old was a slow speaker but could sign ‘please’ if she wanted something, this was helpful as I could offer her a choice, she´d then sign please for what she wanted.’ (Shirley)

‘I was so proud when my son aged 9 months signed to me "mouth hurt" when he was teething. He was such a content baby because he could always tell me what he wanted.’ (Sue)

‘My son is 16 months old. We have been signing for a few months. He can now sign bird, juice, milk, mummy and pig. His Daddy spends time trying to teach him the sign for Daddy but he’s having none of it. Its amazing how fast they pick it up. It just takes a lot of repetitive actions.’ (Claire)

‘I am a deaf mother, my child is hearing. Signing comes naturally as a way of communication even though I am an Oralist in everyday life. Shannon, my daughter is hearing. She has picked up signing and now has a range of seven different words at the age of 12 months. The best thing is this has no impact on her speech development as we say the words with the sign. Even if we ‘test’ the word she will sign it back promptly. Its one of the best forms of communication you can have with your child, the bond you feel is amazing.’ (Jannine)

‘My 2 year old son has development delay and doesn´t speak yet, he has just started to sign ‘more’. It´s amazing to see and he picked it up so quickly. It´s so good because he can communicate with me for the first time. I´m so proud of him’. (Chelsea)

‘I have signed with my son since he was a few weeks old. He loves being able to communicate clearly. The whole family gets involved and enjoys teaching and learning new signs. I am pregnant with my fourth son, we will definitely sign with him when he comes along.’ (Debbie)
